Trentino is known for its enchanting landscapes, striking mountain vistas, and no less important, its excellence in wine and grappa production. Among the unique experiences that Trentino offers is the Giro del Vino 50, a bicycle touring route that winds through the majestic Piana Rotaliana Königsberg, the beating heart of the area’s winemaking tradition.

A heady itinerary in the heart of Trentino

The Giro del Vino 50 is a permanent loop bicycle touring route of about 55km with 600 meters of elevation gain that runs on existing bicycle paths, low-traffic local roads and country paths surrounded by nature, ideal for all lovers of two wheels who want to combine sport and food and wine culture. This is an excursion to be completed in a day, ideal in spring or autumn, when the temperate climate allows for the best appreciation of the variety of landscapes.

The route crosses six different municipalities, linking territories and places of production, thus offering a 360-degree view of the Trentino wine scene. From Lavis to Roverè della Luna, the route is divided into two sections, with a northern loop offering a flat route for faster pedaling, and a southern loop that offers more challenging but full of breathtaking viewpoints.

A path suitable for all

The route lends itself to be tackled with different types of bikes: from Gravel bikes to MTBs, trekking bikes or touring bikes, be they muscle or e-bikes. The important thing is that they are equipped with at least 32 mm tires so that they can safely and confidently tackle the entire trail. We advise against road bikes only as some sections are on gravel, just as we advise against child trailers as some sections run along roads open to traffic.

Viticulture and landscape

Placed in an area with a mild climate due to the protection of the surrounding mountains, the Wine Tour 50 can be taken all year round. The best times, however, are spring, from March to June, and autumn, from late August to November, because of the more pleasant temperatures. The route is designed to be ridden safely in only one direction, counterclockwise, and is well marked and enriched with information panels that tell the story of the area, with special attention to the peculiarities of local wine production. Thanks to the pedalta, one crosses varied landscapes (forests, rivers, vineyards) and the harmonious contrast between the flat areas, the gentle vine-covered hills and the vertical rock walls create unique scenery to admire.

Visiting the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg means exploring small villages, valuable historic-artistic sites (including the Giardino dei Ciucioi in Lavis and the METS – Museo Etnografico trentino San Michele), and of course wineries, distilleries agricultural producers and restaurants where you can taste the excellence of the territory, such as Teroldego Rotaliano, the prince red of Trentino wines, and Nosiola, a more delicate white, as well as the classic method sparkling wine Trento Doc, one of the most beloved and award-winning bubbles in the world. They are also followed by the renowned White Asparagus of Zambana, the apple with all its processed products, as well as meats and cold cuts, coffee and craft beer.
