Ph. Presepi d’Italia
December is time for nativity scenes, and among the most striking ones is the Massa Martana Ice Nativity, staged from Dec. 24 to Jan. 8, 2023 at the 19th Edition of Presepi d’Italia – National Nativity Exhibition.
Made in the province of Perugia, the Ice Nativity will pay homage to one of the best-known works by the great Umbrian painter known as Perugino, namely “The Adoration of the Magi”, on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the death of Pietro Vanucci (1523 – 2023).
The beauty of the Ice Nativity: uniqueness and rarity of the project
The Massa Martana Ice Crib is a thrilling and unique work of art. To complete it, it takes about 30 quintals of ice with expertly crafted grooves that make it shine just as if it were actually illuminated by many lights. Each block of ice is carefully chosen, carved and crafted by artists who love their work and prepare year-round for this important artistic display.
The long-awaited Ice Nativity will be presented carved on large blocks of ice and will be 13 square meters in size with life-size statues that will shine as if they were made of crystal.
The setting of the wonderful medieval village will be made even more magical by the warmth of the locals, the fires that will be lit in the square and the markets that will enliven the streets of the historic center.
