Altidona, a charming village located in the province of Fermo, Marche, stands majestically on a hill overlooking the picturesque Aso valley. Its thousand-year history is rooted in the remote past, with archaeological findings testifying to human presence dating back as far as 150,000 years. Initially inhabited by the Pelasgians, an ancient Greek people, the territory was later colonized by the Picenes, who marked its cultural and social importance until the arrival of the Romans in 485 BC.

Altidona is historically linked to the city of Fermo and was part of the Abbey of Farfa in Sabina. In the rich tapestry of its history, the castle of S. Biagio in Barbolano represents a significant chapter, although it was largely lost during the early Middle Ages. Reconstruction took place in the 12th century, with the foundation of a new castle around the parish of Santa Maria and San Ciriaco, part of the present medieval settlement. The well-preserved walls of this settlement tell stories of bygone eras and the challenges faced by the inhabitants over the centuries.

A visit to Altidona cannot be separated from the Belvedere, a medieval watchtower that offers splendid views of the Aso Valley, an extraordinary vantage point from which the surrounding landscape can be admired. Also, inside the parish church is a valuable panel painting attributed to painter Vincenzo Pagani, depicting the Madonna and Child, two saints and the donor, a work that attracts the attention of visitors for its beauty and historical significance.

The area of Altidona is also rich in archaeological evidence, such as the Roman cistern located in the ancient district of Barbolano and the imposing Villa Montana. These places offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of bygone eras and are perfect for those who enjoy walking through history.

Today, in addition to its cultural heritage, Altidona is home to the Provincial Photo Library, an important photo archiving center that preserves historical images of the Fermo area, serving as a valuable tool for scholars and enthusiasts. Altidona's Municipal Theater is another cultural hub, where a lively and engaging theater season takes place, attracting large audiences with shows of various genres.

For those seeking green areas, the "Due Ponti" Park represents an oasis of tranquility. Surrounded by century-old trees, this park houses a children's play area, making it ideal for families and those who wish to enjoy relaxing moments surrounded by nature. The bike path that runs through the park allows cyclists to ride a section that rejoins the beach, making Altidona also a perfect destination for bicycle lovers.

The Marina di Altidona hamlet, with its sand and pebble beach, represents a renowned tourist hub, welcoming visitors in search of sun and sea. Surrounded by pine forests and centuries-old palm trees, it offers a range of high-quality accommodations that make your stay even more enjoyable.

One cannot forget the polenta with snails festival, an annual event that celebrates the peasant culinary tradition. This event is an opportunity to savor typical dishes of Marche cuisine, which is enriched with meat and fish dishes, thus reflecting the frugality and richness of the local culinary tradition.

Altidona is therefore an enchanting village with a priceless historical and cultural heritage, where every corner tells stories of a fascinating past and where traditions have kept their essence alive in the present. The combination of nature, history and culture offers visitors a unique experience, making Altidona an unmissable stop in the Marche region.
