The village of Frontino rises at the sight of the Monte di Carpegna and imposes itself for its characteristic and picturesque form, while our gaze is lost in a fluctuate by hills and ridges at infinity.
Its origins are ancient and date back to the prehistoric and roman period, as can be inferred from the archaeological ruins of the Alta Valle del Pisaurus (leaf) and tributaries in the locality Camarchino, Linara, New House, Castellaro. The origins of the Castle of Frontino date back with all probability to 1100 (Concordat of Worms, 1122).
It was inserted in the Ecclesiastical Province of Massa Trabaria until 1376, so much so that he was named Frontino ground. Intense and troubled was the history of this frontier castle, disputed between the Malatesta of Rimini and the Dukes of Montefeltro, which Frontino remained always faithful.
Historical was the unsuccessful attempt, dating back to 1451, where the Frontinesi they repulsed the assault of Sigismondo Malatesta, as memorable was the victory of 1522 on Giovanni dei Medici, said black bands.
The historic center, called by the inhabitants the castle, is perched on a spur overlooking the river and the picturesque valley of the Mutino. Arriving it seems to enter an old sitting room: the streets and squares are paved with cobblestones of the Mutino, flowers and plants along the terraced houses.
The towers and the mighty walls recall the origins of this combative Castle, advanced sentinel of Montefeltro. In any way deserve a visit the Franciscan Convent of Montefiorentino, the Mill of the Ponte Vecchio and the monastery of San Girolamo.
