Laurino, Contrada Sant'Antonio

Laurino is a characteristic village cilentano that, from the top of a hill, 531 m a.s.l., dominates the whole surrounding landscape. At the foot of the hill flows the river Calore Lucano, coming from a source on Mount Cervati and rich in fauna is very particular, just think for example to the presence of the otter.

The era of the foundation probably dates back to the III century B.C. (278 a.C.). In fact his past was more glorious in the present, if we reflect on the fact that in the XII century the population far exceeded the 3,500 inhabitants, distributed on capoluogho and other fractions (Piaggine, Bag, Casaletto and sewer) from which you are then developed the surrounding countries. Today, because of emigration, it counts less than 1.900.

It takes its name, very probably, by the fact that in the surrounding vegetation is very widespread laurel. Consequently derives from the latin (Laurus, Laurinus) Laurino.

In the course of the centuries the ancient peoples have left valuable testimonies of their passage, as we recall the two wonderful medieval bridges donkey back, the ruins of the castle of the Longobardo, frescoes and various works carved in wood of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Rich in vegetation and uncontaminated nature, Laurino was known in the past as a "Pearl of the heat".

Certainly deserve a visit the convent of Sant'Antonio da Padova, the Church of Santa Maria Consalvo, the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Ducal Palace of Spinelli and the remains of the Longobard Castle.
