Montalto delle Marche, a picturesque village located in the province of Ascoli Piceno, represents a fascinating combination of history, culture, and scenic beauty. Nestled in the verdant Marche countryside, the town offers breathtaking views, ranging from rolling hills to the Sibillini Mountain Range, easily reached in twenty minutes from either the sea or the mountains. These natural features not only enchant the eyes of visitors, but also tell an ancient story, dating back to prehistoric and Roman times.

The historical importance of Montalto delle Marche is highlighted by the activities of the ArcheoClub, which has located as many as fourteen Roman-era settlements and one Neolithic village. These archaeological finds, which range from the Neolithic (about 6000 B.C.) to Roman times and beyond, are displayed in the city's Archaeological Museum. This museum, which houses more than 3,000 artifacts, offers an educational tour that allows visitors to discover the deep and fascinating roots of this historic area.

Montalto's history was further enriched by its establishment as a garrison in 1586, under the jurisdiction of the Papal State. This state controlled as many as thirteen surrounding municipalities. During this period, Pope Sixtus V recognized the importance of the village, establishing a mint and giving Montalto the title of city. Sixtus V's presence left a lasting legacy, including the creation of the precious "Reliquary of Montalto," preserved in the Bishop's Sistine Museum, which serves as a testament to the art and culture of the time.

Walking through Montalto's historic center, visitors are greeted by a delightful mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture. The imposing walls and gates that surround the village bear witness to its defensive past, while noble palaces such as Palazzo Sacconi, Palazzo Paradisi, and Palazzo Pasqualini tell stories of ancient noble families. The Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, is another focused point of interest, not only for its architecture but also for the precious frescoes and works of art it houses.

In addition to its rich history, Montalto delle Marche celebrates its culture with several museums. In addition to the Archaeological Museum, the Prisons Museum and the Ethnographic Museum "Water, Land, Canvas" offer unique insight into local life and traditions. The Prisons Museum, in particular, is fascinating, as it features graffiti and drawings left by prisoners and stories told through a sound system that reproduces the dramatic tales of those who were held there.

Nearby, the hamlet of Patrignone offers the opportunity to explore the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria in Viminato, with Renaissance frescoes adorning its walls. The hamlet of Porchia is famous for its beautiful Pagani panel painting and a 15th-century Nativity fresco in the crypt of the Church of Santa Lucia. It is also interesting to visit the hamlet of Valdaso, characterized by a charming rural landscape where orchards alternate with cultivated fields.

Popular tradition has it that in 1215, St. Francis of Assisi chose this silent place, enveloped by nature, to spread his rule, founding the Convent of the Fratte. This convent has considerable historical and cultural importance, not only because it saw the future Pope Sixtus V, Felice Peretti, pass through, but also because of the magnificent frescoes of the Giotto school that adorn its walls.

Montalto delle Marche is not only a place where the past lives on through monuments and museums, but it is also a vibrant center of culture and tradition. It is a place to discover, where art, history and nature intertwine to offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
