Located only a hundred kilometers from Rome, Monte San Giovanni Campano is a hidden treasure in the heart of the province of Frosinone. Perched on the slopes of the Ernici Mountains, this historic village captivates with its cultural heritage, its thousand-year history, and the scenic beauty that surrounds it. Its creation is the result of encastellation, a phenomenon that saw populations take refuge in higher and safer places during barbarian invasions, thus creating a core of life rich in history and tradition.

Fascinating story

The name Monte San Giovanni Campano comes from an ancient Benedictine monastery founded in the 6th century, dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and Evangelist. The "Campano" part refers to the surrounding countryside, a province that once belonged to the Papal States.

The characteristic conformation of the village, built along a 420-meter-high rocky hill, culminates in an imposing castle, a symbol of fortification and fear, but also of resistance and determination. The history of Monte San Giovanni Campano is rich in significant events. According to several historical sources, including local scholar Irenaeus Pius Valeriani, the original population, known as Castelforte, began to settle between the rocky hill and a second hill, San Marco. It is said that as early as the 5th century, the inhabitants of Cereate moved to these lands to seek refuge from external threats.

In 1495, the area experienced a dark interlude in its history when Charles VIII of France occupied the area, destroying the castle. With the unification of Italy in 1870, Monte San Giovanni Campano became an integral part of the new Kingdom of Italy. During World War II, the town's population showed extraordinary courage, so much so that, in 2012, the town was awarded the Civil Valor Medal for its heroism during the conflict.

Architectural and natural heritage

The ancient core of Monte San Giovanni Campano is told by its medieval architecture, characterized by an imposing protective wall, turrets and historic gates that recall the village's glorious past. The three medieval gates, Porta dei Codardi, Porta di San Rocco and Porta della Scrima, tell stories of travelers, merchants and warriors who plied these lands.

An enticing opportunity for visitors is a walk around the perimeter of the village, where they can see the thirty-six turrets, some of which are integrated into houses or covered by vegetation. The Castle of Monte San Giovanni Campano, now partly restored, is a place that invites reflection on the centuries of history it has passed through, including the imprisonment of St. Thomas.

The surrounding landscape is equally fascinating. The Ernici Mountains, which rise more than 400 meters above sea level, offer breathtaking views and trails for nature lovers and hikers to explore. Peaks such as Punta dell'Ortica, Mount Pedicinetto and Mount Castellone stand out against the blue sky, beauties that attract hikers and photography enthusiasts from all over.

The Liri River and the Amaseno Stream run alongside the area, offering not only water resources but also wonderful opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities for families and groups of friends.

A journey into flavors

The gastronomy of Monte San Giovanni Campano is a cultural experience not to be missed. Typical dishes include "sagne e fagioli," a traditional dish that encapsulates the genuine flavors of the Ciocian countryside. The "fedelini," thin fettuccine pasta topped with a rich meat sauce, is another must for lovers of good food. "fettuccine alla ciociara," bruschetta cappuccina, and "garofolata"-sheep meat rolls with spices and cloves-represent the triumph of local gastronomic tradition.

Monte San Giovanni Campano is a place where time seems to stand still, a village that tells stories through its stones and flavors. The combination of fascinating history, medieval architecture and natural landscapes of rare beauty makes this municipality an excellent destination for those seeking an authentic and enriching experience.
