Mother Church of San Nicola di Pà tara

The Mother Church of San Nicola di Pàtara in Cisternino was built in the XIV century on a paleochristian church of Basilian monks. The neoclassic prospectus, crowned by a tympanum and marked by pilaster strips, was erected in the 19th century to replace the previous, Romanesque. The interior presents a plant with three naves divided by columns with capitals in stone that retain the original medieval imprint.

In the right side aisle opens the chapels of the Blessed Sacrament and of the Rosary, with a sculpture of the imago pietatis. On the wall that connects the two chapels, stands out the Madonna of the Goldfinch, magnificent example of Renaissance pugliese, realized in 1517 by Stefano da Putignano. On the left, you expend traces of paintings with the Madonna di Costantinopoli between San Giorgio and Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. On the main altar, governor among the wooden statue of San Nicola and even in the sacristy you can admire paintings and bas-reliefs.
