The Maria della Neve Church stands majestically at the highest part of the historic center of Tiriolo, in the province of Catanzaro. Built in the 11th century as an Italo-Greek church, this place of worship has undergone several transformations over the centuries, reflecting the richness of its history and the variety of architectural influences. Initially conceived with a single nave and a bell tower on the ridge of the roof, the church was expanded in the 18th century with the addition of aisles, choir, sacristy and a new bell tower, thus enriching its structure and beauty.
The façade of the church presents a Romanesque-Renaissance style, characterized by projecting cornices in limestone from the mountain of Tiriolo. The main granite portal is a prominent feature, surmounted by a decorative triangular tympanum of green marble from Gimigliano, adorned with floral motifs that draw visitors’ attention. Inside, the church is divided into three naves, supported by arches resting on imposing pillars with Corinthian order capitals. This arrangement not only lends a sense of grandeur, but also creates an atmosphere of sacredness that envelops the faithful.
The high altar, located in the center of the building, is a masterpiece in painted stucco imitating the fine inlaid marble of altars of the Neapolitan school. At its center is the wooden statue of St. Mary of the Snows, dating from the 18th century, which testifies to the community’s devotion. In the aisles, mosaics made of signino white, pink and green stone from Gimigliano can be admired, further enriching the church floor.
Noteworthy is the 15th-century wooden crucifix of the Sicilian school, a valuable work that was kept in the convent church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The church is also the custodian of a beautiful wooden statue of Our Lady of the Snow, the patron saint and protector of Tiriolo, recently restored and of great artistic value.
The Maria della Neve Church is not only a place of worship, but also an important cultural and artistic heritage for the community of Tiriolo. Its history, architecture and the works of art it holds make it a real treasure to be discovered by those who visit this fascinating Calabrian town.
