The Salbertrand Grand Wood Natural Park extends on the side exposed to the north of the Upper Susa valley for over 3,700 hectares, from 1000 meters above sea-level to 2,600m with the peaks of the mountains Genevris (2,500 m), Blegier (2.550 m), Gran Costa (2,600 m) and Gran Serin (2,589 m). The municipalities concerned are: Chiomonte, Exilles, Salbertrand, Oulx and Sauze d’Oulx in Susa Valley, Usseaux and Pragelato in Chisone valley.
It was established in 1980 to protect the luxuriant vegetation and in particular the prized fir and the extensive larch-cembreti, since then the protection is extended to 360° on the flora and fauna that includes ungulates and wolf. The Gran Bosco is a SIC and therein have been identified well 14 types of environments of the Habitats Directive (D.H.), of which the priority 3: woods of lime, maple and ash of screes and d’impluvio, woods alluvial white alder and white willow and formations hygrophilous of mosses calcarizzanti.
Without denying its main vocation to the defense of nature and environmental heritage, the institution has always recognized the need to preserve, witness and enhance the historical memory of his community. For this purpose has created and managed by 1996 the Colombano Romean ecomuseum, dedicated to the aspects of the work and of tradition in Upper susa valley.
