The Soriano Calabro Museum Complex is a cultural complex located within the Monumental Architectural Complex of the Old Convent of San Domenico. This pole represents the historical and artistic heart of the town, housing a vast collection of valuable cultural goods.
It also underscores the cultural importance of the province of Vibo Valentia in the Calabrian context, displaying artistic artifacts and testimonies that attest to the quality level of Vibo Valentia’s craftsmen and the full inclusion of the territory in the main commercial and cultural routes of the past.
The Museum Pole of Soriano Calabro includes:
- The MuMar, Museum of Marbles: Created to bring together surviving works from the 1783 earthquake, it offers an organic and chronological display. Located in the spaces where the refectory and kitchen used to be, it preserves decorative marbles from the ancient church, including the precious Head of St. Catherine of Siena in Carrara marble, attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
- The Pinacoteca Civica: Includes various sections, from medieval and Baroque paintings by southern artists, especially sacred art, to works by contemporary Calabrian artists. The “Treasures of the Holy House” section collects paintings, engravings, reliquaries, vestments and sacred objects from the Convent of St. Dominic, some of which survived the 1783 earthquake.
- The Museum of Territorial Ceramics: Presents a careful selection of ceramic artifacts from the Vibonese area, covering a period from the early Middle Ages to the contemporary age, and is the first exhibition of its kind in Calabria.
- The Muterr, Earthquake Museum: Unique in its kind, it covers 2,000 sq. m. in the underground spaces of the ancient monastery and interprets, also architecturally, the ambivalence between enhancing the past and improving the future through technological and scientific research.
- The Monumental Archaeological Park: It offers an evocative route among the “magnificent ruins” of the ancient convent, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the history and art of Soriano Calabro.
